Skin tags are soft, harmless growths that appear to protrude from or hang off the skin. They can occur in men and women of any age, and most commonly appear in areas of skin folds, like the groin or the armpit.
It is unsure what is the cause of skin tags, but it is thought to result from a variety of factors such as chafing or irritation, insulin resistance, Human Papilloma Virus (which causes warts), or elevated hormone levels such as occur during pregnancy.
Skin tags are unlikely to become malignant, although this cannot be determined until examined by a dermatologist. Other skin conditions can display symptoms that are visually similar to skin tags.
Several methods are utilized by dermatologists to remove skin tags for cosmetic purposes, including surgical means and cryotherapy. You should NEVER attempt to remove a skin tag on your own.
