Vitiligo is a condition where the pigment-producing cells of our skin (melanocytes) are destroyed in some areas. This results in patches of skin that appear to have completely lost all pigmentation. Vitiligo can occur in many places on the body, or may be localized to one area.
The cause of vitiligo is unknown. Some doctors think it is an autoimmune disease where melanocytes are destroyed, while others think it can result from specific instances of trauma such as severe sunburn or extended periods of emotional stress.
While there is no known cure for vitiligo, it can be treated with topical and oral medications with the aim of restoring color to the affected areas. Some types of treatment are not for everyone, and prescribed treatments don’t always work to correct the light spots.
