Microneedling
in Boston, MA

At Regeneris Medspa & Cosmetic Surgery, our microneedling treatment relies on a patient’s skin’s natural healing response to reduce or eliminate unwanted blemishes, fine lines, and wrinkles while improving overall skin quality. When we are young, wounds heal, and blemishes fade practically overnight. But as we age, our skin loses its enthusiasm for healing, and rejuvenation slows down. Microneedling can also improve skin laxity and luster, leading to healthier, tighter, glowing skin.
At the helm of every microneedling treatment is Dr. Ryan Welter, founder and regenerative aesthetics specialist. He is globally acclaimed for his innovations in stem cell-based treatments. We aim to ensure that every patient receives the highest level of personalized care available in Boston through our expertise.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling, alternatively called collagen induction therapy, is a virtually painless, non-surgical facial treatment that can revitalize the skin. Through the procedure, Dr. Welter employs a fine, sterile needle device to cause small micro-injuries on the surface of the face. The precise punctures trigger the body’s own healing mechanism. They stimulate growth factors that increase the formation of collagen as well as elastin—two proteins necessary for taut, youthful-looking skin.
The microneedling treatment is commonly selected by those seeking to treat fine lines, acne scars, large pores, sun spots, or a general dullness of the skin without surgery. The procedure itself does not strip layers of the skin, however, as it refines the tone, texture, and firmness of the skin over a period. It may also be used along with other treatments, such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or serums, for added benefits. The procedure is safe for a majority of skin types and has minimal downtime, which makes it a favorite for restoring the skin.

Areas Treated with Microneedling

Microneedling is a highly versatile treatment that can be used on nearly every part of the body. It’s FDA-cleared, minimally invasive, and requires little to no downtime—making it a favorite for patients who want results without recovery. Here’s a breakdown of the most commonly treated areas and how microneedling helps improve each:

Initial Consultation and Evaluation

On the initial appointment, Dr. Welter examines a patient’s skin issues and discusses with them what they hope to achieve with treatment. If they have acne scars, sun damage, fine lines, or stretch marks – or perhaps all of the above – microneedling may be worth considering. However, this can only be decided after a thorough assessment has taken place. Dr. Welter examines the thickness of different areas as well as how sensitive or elastic they are. Once a patient’s personalized treatment plan is designed, they receive preparation instructions and a cost estimate.

How Microneedling Treatment Works?

The skin’s remarkable healing abilities are most prominent in our younger years and tend to diminish as we age. Thankfully, with microneedling, a patient’s skin’s healing powers can be supercharged deliberately to give them a cosmetic edge over blemishes and wrinkles.
By using literal microneedles, we can stimulate a patient’s skin’s production of two naturally occurring healing agents—elastin and collagen. These healing agents get to work repairing the “damage” they sense from the microneedles, healing old acne scars, sun damage, stretch marks, and so much more in the process. Here is a detailed description:
Before the microneedling session begins, Dr. Welter carefully cleans the patient’s skin. Then, he applies a numbing cream to ensure that the patient stays completely comfortable throughout the treatment. This cream takes 20–30 minutes to take full effect.
Next, Dr. Welter uses a special microneedling gadget to glide super-fine needles over treated areas. This creates small skin wounds that prompt the body’s natural healing process – and encourage it to make more collagen and elastin.
Once microneedling has been finished, calming serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may be applied to improve healing and achieve the best results. The entire procedure generally takes 45 minutes to an hour. However, this time frame varies depending on the number of areas being treated and their size.

Many patients are now opting to take their microneedling treatment to the next level by adding PRP – also known as a “vampire facial” – into the mix. This extra-strong cutting-edge technology treatment harnesses the healing powers of the patient’s blood, which is put through a centrifuge to separate the platelets. These growth factor-rich platelets are then spread over the skin during microneedling. Because the micro-channels created during the procedure go right down into the skin, the PRP can get to work deep below the surface. This way, it stimulates collagen production further. PRP can improve skin tone, reduce downtime, and encourage a more youthful glow, making it great for those with acne scars, fine lines, or dull texture.

Recovery After Microneedling

Immediately following the treatment, the patient may notice redness, minimal swelling, and a sunburn sensation. These are normal effects that typically subside in 24 to 72 hours. The majority of patients can resume work the following day. Though we advise avoiding makeup application and skincare product use (excluding what our physician recommends) for 24 hours. At Regeneris Medspa, we include a post-procedure kit to help keep their skin clean, soothed, and moisturized during this important healing process.
Early in the course, most commonly in the initial week, mild tightness or peeling of the skin may be noticed as the new skin develops. Sun exposure must be severely restricted. Patients should apply SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days. Light moisturizers and gentle cleansers are recommended, with active ingredients such as retinols or acids to be avoided. It may be necessary to repeat several sessions four to six weeks apart, depending on the depth of the treatment.
Texture, tone, and overall skin radiance typically show a noticeable improvement within two to three weeks as collagen production is boosted. Further benefits – like increased elasticity, smoother skin, and reduction of fine lines – will become more apparent in the following months. Results can be long-lasting, provided regular skincare is maintained along with occasional follow-up sessions.

Are You Eligible for Microneedling?

Microneedling procedures are widely considered safe for multiple areas of the body and nearly all skin types. If a patient is a  healthy adult with undesired skin blemishes, sun damage, or deep, prominent wrinkles, microneedling may be perfect. During their consultation at Regeneris Medspa & Cosmetic Surgery, we’ll speak with a patient about their individual candidacy and may even suggest a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment to enhance their microneedling results even further.

Candidates for Microneedling

Microneedling is a gentle, minimally invasive resurfacing therapy that can be used on a variety of patients who want softer, tighter, and healthier-looking skin. Some of the following characteristics can qualify someone as a good candidate for microneedling:

The Benefits of Microneedling

Microneedling procedures have skyrocketed in popularity over the last few years. By addressing dozens of skin issues in one quick, simple, and comfortable process, microneedling provides incredible results with long-lasting benefits. Better still, procedures only require 30 minutes to an hour, with results lasting 3-5 months. Here are some common benefits:

Better Skin Quality

Microneedling jumpstarts a patient’s skin’s own collagen and elastin production, which can improve rough patches, shrink enlarged pores, and overhaul general texture. The upshot: a softer and more uniform surface that looks and feels refreshed.
Thanks to those tiny micro-injuries that trigger collagen production, microneedling can help reduce fine “laugh lines” around a patient’s eyes and mouth, plus those on their forehead. The procedure may take years off a patient’s face — but won’t leave them with telltale signs of having work done.
Microneedling works by remodeling old scar tissue and encouraging the growth of new, healthy skin. This makes it great at improving the appearance of acne scars while also evening out skin tone in areas prone to blemishes.
This procedure can improve skin laxity with multiple sessions, giving the face and neck a more lifted appearance. It may help patients show less sagging as they get older—and results get better over time.
After undergoing microneedling and witnessing the positive transformation of their skin, a lot of patients feel considerably more confident. They don’t need to use filters on social media and feel better in social settings.
A major advantage of microneedling compared to lots of other skin treatments like laser therapy is that it doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation in individuals with dark skin tones. In fact, it works safely and effectively on all types and hues of skin.

Microneedling FAQs

Is Microneedling painful?
For most, microneedling is a comfortable procedure without noticeable discomfort. Despite the “damage” caused by the microneedling procedure, the treatment is generally safe, comfortable, and easygoing. There’s a distinct difference between what we think of as being “uncomfortable” and what the skin registers as “damage.” Ultimately, your skin is more sensitive to microscopic damage than you may be.
Because microneedling relies on stimulating a natural body’s natural healing response, results can persist for several months to nearly half a year after the procedure. The uptick in collagen and elastin production can even prevent the intensity and frequency of further acne or rosacea outbreaks, and some blemishes and acne scars will permanently close or vanish. This doesn’t mean, however, that further damage is prevented. A proper skincare routine will be necessary to ensure the longest-lasting results.
Microneedling not only heals old scars caused by whiteheads and blackheads—but the treatment also allows new blemishes and flare-ups to heal faster. By encouraging greater production of elastin and collagen, outbreaks may be less frequent, briefer in duration, less painful, and less likely to create recurring scars. Overall, microneedling can heal, prevent, and hasten acne outbreaks for months after your last appointment.
